FPDB-01 | An Early 20th Century Boston Fire Department Associated Photofeature Numbered Press Photographer Badge Cased and Identified This is an especially rare custom die World War I Era Press Photographer badge issued by the Boston Fire Department to Associated Photofeature photographer Ben Diver. Ben Diver was a graduate of MIT who worked in the Boston area. During World War II, he was a combat photographer who landed at Normandy and then moved south with the US Army and took a significant number of photographs of the liberation of Paris in August 1944. After a tour in the ETO, Ben Diver returned to Boston where he worked in the Photo Laboratory at the famed E-Wing of Building 20 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. There is an account of his activities in mid-1945 here. The photographs he took of the Radiation Laboratory in Building 22 were later published in a 6 page spread in LIFE Magazine in November 1945. Some of the outtakes and an account of his work at MIT is here. We have some of his many ETO photographs up at another offering. The badge measures 3 inches high by 1-3/4 inches wide. It is heavy silver plate over copper, and very finely detailed. The number is "3" below the Boston City skyline seal surrounded by a wreath. BOSTON FD is over top of the seal in raised letters and the Associated Photofeature name in black lettering stamped and enameled at the top. There is no maker mark. It has a very early drop in pin and safety catch design. This is an image of the back of the badge. The case is leather covered wood with plush purple velvet and royal purple silk padded interior. There is wear to the case, and the bottom edge of the wooden lid is detached (can be re-glued, it's not broken, just detached). The condition is generally near excellent with some minor wear to the silver plate in the high spots showing a bit of copper underneath, apparent in the images shown. This is an extremely rare badge, and would be a centerpiece for any Boston badge or Press Photographer badge collection. |
