Featured Item

This is a very rare and unusual piece of trench art, made from the shell casing of an 18-Pounder field artillery piece belonging to the "C" Sub Section, 68 Battery, Canadian Field Artillery assigned to the North Russia Expeditionary Force (OPERATION ARCHANGEL) dated April 1919.

It is historically significant in that it has the roster of names of the surviving members of the unit up until April 1919, listed in order by rank, then last name.  It may be the only record of who was actually in the unit at the time, as the war diaries for April and May of the 68 C.F.A. are reported as missing and presumed lost.  Close-up portions showing the names are shown top and bottom.

The 68 Btty had been divided into at least two sections, covering different areas of engagement.  The unit was reintegrated sometime in April (the "Seletski detachment").  It was shortly after some intense combat with the Bolsheviks that the C.F.A. and the 16th Brigade was withdrawn at the request of the Canadian Prime Minister in May 1919.  A 1986 preliminary history compiled by the Canadian Directorate of History, National Defense Headquarters, Ottawa Canada is located here describing the C.F.A. unit and its actions throughout the North Russia Expedition.  Note in the decorations section of the document that several of the names and ranks match the names on this superlative artifact received the Military Medal and St. George's Cross and other awards for valor.  Of the 25 names listed, 5 received decorations as noted below:

The shell itself has numerous headstamps on the case and primer.  The shell appears to be a 1918 case, with a 9/18 dated primer.

The back of the shell has a hole at the base, from where a lamp cord once exited.  The top shows the brass and wood mounting for a lamp assembly (long gone).
