Operation Bernhard Counterfeit Bank of England Note

This is an interesting collectible item, produced by inmates of  Barracks 19 at KZ-Lager Sachsenhausen (near Oranienburg) under the direction of SS Major Walter Bernhard Kruger. This was an elaborate scheme to flood the Allies with nearly perfect forgeries of Bank of England notes in several denominations, most 100 Pounds and below. According to some accounts, nearly 600 million Pounds of counterfeit money was printed. Some got into circulation and were detected by the Bank of England when a clerk noted a coincidence of serial numbers.

This operation was known also as "Operation Andrew" or "Operation Andreas". There is an interesting personal account of a visitor to the Sachsenhausen museum regarding this incredible forgery team of 149 inmates at this camp producing these notes here.

There are some noticeable differences between the German counterfeits and genuine Bank of England notes. The counterfeit has a dull look in Britannia's eyes, her lower lip not as full or well defined, there is less clarity on the cross at top of her crown, the fleur-de-lis on the crown are not as well defined, and the markings on the vase and the shadow around it are not as dark.

This is a view of the back (which is not printed, but shows the watermarks fairly clearly). The condition is very good to fine with some slight soiling on the face.

The vast majority of these notes were destroyed after the war, and are very difficult to find today.

KZ Lager Items

These items were part of a very large number of items that were recovered by one of the members of the humanitarian aid units sent by the US and British allies at the end of the war. A significant number of items were recovered by British PTE Arthur Bernard Afford, RAMC, who was assigned to the General Hospital at Belsen Camp the late spring and summer of 1945. Most of the items were tagged or labeled by Afford. A few of the items have certification tags signed by officers of the unit.

This top lot will be sold as a complete set. All of it is documented to Afford by notations and tags.

Not pictured is his wooden first aid compartmented box with a Red Cross label with his name, rank, branch and service number, Bergen Belsen and the date June 1945. The box contains some miscellaneous pieces, including Afford's medical corps insignia and brass buttons, a piece of shrapnel from a cannon shell, a swastika from a denazified badge, a 1940 dated first aid bandage in the wrapper, a broken clay pipe, and a metal button. The box measures 11=3/4 inches long, 4 inches wide and 2-3/4 inches high. It has a hinged lid. It shows moderate wear from use.

Other items are listed as separately priced, such as the German Railway Commandant hand stamp.

KZ-01
KZ Lager Bergen-Belzen Concentration Camp Lot
This group has four major parts. The first part is the Red Cross box described above.

The second piece is is a very scarce and unusual hand made box recovered from the Bergen Belsen Concentration Camp in 1945.

The top of the box has a removable lid that is decorated with swastikas and linked arrowheads, and a checkerboard pattern in the center. The dates 1943-1944 are to the right and left of the center, and the name EMIL HENK is on the top and bottom. The word "BELSEN" is marked diagonally on the checkerboard. The sides of the box are rendered in a square pattern of boxes with "X"s at the intersections, reminiscent of barbed wire.

The box measures 4-1/2 inches square on the lid and 4 inches square on the exterior of the box. It is 3 inches tall overall, with the lid in place. It stands on four ball feet and the interior of the lid also has four ball feet that serve to keep it secured to the box.

The interior of the box is wood, and the exterior is metal. The bottom is wood covered in cloth. There is a notation on the bottom "Prisoner made casket from Belsen Camp 1945 A. B. Afford R.A.M.C."  visible in this image of the back.

The third piece is actually two metal covered rubber rings, decorated on the outsides with a pattern of intertwined flowers worked into the metal. The metal is secured by a number of small tacks. There is some moderate to heavy wear apparent, and some cracking of the hard black rubber. The rings are 2-1/2 by 1-1/4 approximately.

There is a tag on the inside of one of the rings indicating it was removed on 29 June 1945 from Bergen Belsen and it is signed by a captain.

The last item is a very corroded and non-functional pocket watch. It is tagged on the inside as having been removed from the camp on 24 June 1945 and signed by a lieutenant.

All pieces have wear as shown and described. All items are in near relic condition.
