This is a unique document. Rarity of this particular order at this particular time in German history is compounded by an obsolete sumptuary law that required the recipient's estate to return the document to the crown upon his death. This law was repealed before von Rogge's death, which allowed the document to remain in private hands.
This document is historically significant in that it was rendered in 1867, a year of particularly confusing political situations within the Austrian Empire.
This diploma names the recipient to the Unseres Ritter Ordens der eisener Krone dritte Klasse [Knight's Order of the Iron Crown III Class] (22nd on the Austrian Order of Precedence, just above the Knights Cross of the Franz Joseph Order) and invests the Hannover Guelphen-Ordens [Hanoverian Guelphen Order]. At the time of its award, only 100 members were allowed to be in this particular class. The award carried the further investiture of nobility. The heraldry of the Rogge Coat of Arms is detailed in the document.
The award was rendered in 1867, in the nineteenth year of the reign of Franz Joseph I. It is signed by Franz Joseph, and Count Eduard Franz Joseph von Taaffe, the prime minister of the newly reformed Austro-Hungarian Empire. There are two other signatures of witnesses to the signing.
The leather covered wooden coffin case is lined in watered silk, gold embossed with the maker's name. It has gilded brass Imperial Coat of Arms and corner embellishments, and is complete with the original lock and key. It measures 15-3/4 by 19 by 4 inches to the extreme edges. There is some wear to the leather at the corners from over a century of storage.
The document is entirely hand rendered calligraphy on glossy vellum (lambskin). There is profuse gilding in 24 karat gold and brilliant colors in the coat of arms and throughout the calligraphy on the document. The document measures 22-1/2 inches wide (folded to 11-1/4 inches) and 15-1/4 inches high. The cover measures 12 by 15-1/2. Each page is separated by onionskin.
The document is enclosed and retained by heavy gold braid in a very heavily tooled leather cover with applied gilded brass embellishments and enameled Rogge Coat of Arms. It is maker marked on the inside of the cover as shown. There are malachite beads at the corners. One is missing but could be easily recreated by a competent craftsman. This is a view of the bottom of the document cover showing the feet and the back of the seal case.
The Imperial Seal is rendered in deep red-purple wax and encased in a gilded brass cover with the Imperial Coat of Arms in high relief. The heavy gold rope is completely threaded throughout the document and cover and sealed top and bottom as shown. All seals and the gold braided rope are intact and complete. The seal case measures over 5 inches in diameter and the case is nearly an inch thick.
Close-up views of each page are shown below. The links above show specific detail of the document and case. The images are large and take time to load. Please be patient.
The condition is generally near excellent throughout, except as noted above, and as seen in the images shown.
This very rare document would be a crowning achievement and centerpiece of any collection.
