General Pershing Book

A UNIQUE Autographed Numbered Copy of My Experiences in The World War by General John J. Pershing profusely signed with WWI High Leader Autographs

There are more than 300 signatures of leaders, personalities, and participants in the Great War in these two books. There are at least 20 general grade officers (during WWI) and dozens of signatures of field grade and company grade officers destined to become generals. The signatures of Harry Truman, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Generals of the Army John J. Pershing (appears twice in this book), Douglas MacArthur lead a stellar cast of signatures that appear throughout both volumes of this set.

The books are the Author's Autographed Limited Edition of 1931, numbered 1646 of 2100 copies printed.

A very partial list of some of the high ranking signers of these books is listed below:

  • President Harry S. Truman

  • General Dwight D. Eisenhower

  • General John J. Pershing (twice)

  • General Douglas MacArthur

  • General Charles Muir

  • General Omar Bundy

  • General William Wright

  • General Frank Coe

  • General Ben Foulois

  • General Walter Bethal

  • General Hugh Drum

  • General Paul Malone

  • General Henri Petain

  • General Edward MacGlachlin

  • Many more general officers

Also, scattered throughout the book, generally in the specific parts of the text that reference them personally -- or the unit they were assigned to -- are a number of other signatures. Most of them are annotated with their rank, unit and branch of service. There are signatures from the following branches of the services:

  • US Army

    • Army Nurse Corps

    • Medical Corps

    • Air Service (several IDed to specific squadrons, including the 1st Pursuit Squadron, and others

    • Balloon Units

    • Field Artillery

    • Cavalry

    • Infantry

    • Transportation

    • Machine Gun Battalions

    • Chemical Mortar (Gas Regiments)

    • General Staff

  • USNRF

  • USMC

  • B&O Railroad (Daniel Willard, who took over the French Railroad system)

  • American Field Service

  • Volunteer Ambulance Drivers

  • American Red Cross

  • Others

Many of the signatures have not been identified, simply because there are so many of them. Most of the signers made significant contributions to the war, were highly decorated, high ranking, or of other importance.

The thumbnails below link to larger images. As these are autographs, they are shown in detailed LARGE images. The thumbnails should open a new window so you don't get lost. Simply close it when you are done. Please note, you only are seeing about 100 of the signatures here, there are a couple hundred more that simply can't be shown practically.

The condition of the books is used, but generally near excellent and very well-cared for. There are markings throughout from signers and signs of frequent careful use. There is some wear to the covers and spines, as shown below:

MOH-0016 USA NOT Medal of Honor Holder USMC Colonel Harvey Curtiss Barnum, Jr. Signed 3 x 5 Inch Card
Colonel Harvey Curtiss Barnum, Jr. (born July 21, 1940), is a retired United States Marine Corps officer who received the Medal of Honor for valor during the Vietnam War.

He was the fourth Marine to receive the medal for valor in Vietnam. He retired from the Marine Corps in 1989 after more than 27 years of service. Barnum is serving as Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Reserve Affairs, a position he has held since July 23, 2001.
Medals of Colonel Harvey Curtiss Barnum, Jr.

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty as Forward Observer for Artillery, while attached to Company H, Second Battalion, Ninth Marines, Third Marine Division (Reinforced), in action against communist forces at Ky Phu in Quang Tin Province, Republic of Vietnam, on 18 December 1965.

When the company was suddenly pinned down by a hail of extremely accurate enemy fire and was quickly separated from the remainder of the battalion by over five hundred meters of open and fire-swept ground, and casualties mounted rapidly, Lieutenant Barnum quickly made a hazardous reconnaissance of the area seeking targets for his artillery. Finding the rifle company commander mortally wounded and the radio operator killed, he, with complete disregard for his own safety, gave aid to the dying commander, then removed the radio from the dead operator and strapped it to himself.

He immediately assumed command of the rifle company, and moving at once into the midst of the heavy fire, rallying and giving encouragement to all units, reorganized them to replace the loss of key personnel and led their attack on enemy positions from which deadly fire continued to come.

His sound and swift decisions and his obvious calm served to stabilize the badly decimated units and his gallant example as he stood exposed repeatedly to point out targets served as an inspiration to all. Provided with two armed helicopters, he moved fearlessly through enemy fire to control the air attack against the firmly entrenched enemy while skillfully directing one platoon in a successful counterattack in the key enemy positions.

Having thus cleared a small area, he requested and directed the landing of two transport helicopters for the evacuation of the dead and wounded. He then assisted in the mopping up and final seizure of the battalion's objective.

His gallant initiative and heroic conduct reflected great credit upon himself and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and United States Naval Service.
