Gauleiter Josef Grohé Political Library Collection

This section has a number of books of historical significance regarding the Third Reich from the formative years of the 1920s through the end of the war.

These books were all part of the library of Gauleiter Josef Grohé who was the district leader of Aachen-Koln and was directly subordinate to Dr. Robert Ley in the NSDAP chain of command. He was one of the first 100,000, having joined the NSDAP in 1922 and rejoining in 1925 with a member number 13340, after the prohibition was lifted (He was awarded the Golden Party Badge in 1933).

In 1928, he was the city delegate to the NSDAP. He was appointed Gauleiter in 1931. He was the Reichstag delegate in 1932, then selected to the Prussian Council of State in 1933. He continued his political career throughout the war years. When Germany fell, he went into hiding under an assumed name. He managed to escape capture by the Allies, succeeding until July 1946, when he was turned in by locals to the Americans. He served 4-1/2 years in prison and was paroled in 1950. He died in 1988.

The photo below shows him working at his desk, and one of his custom bookplates is shown below the photo.

This collection of books includes a number of presentation copies of Das Dritte Reich, annotated and initialed copies of several years of the Prussian legislation, Preußische Gesetzstammlung, a number of years of annotated and initialed copies of the German legislation, Reichsgesetzblatt, and other similar legislative documents. Several are shown below, and representative of the remainder, except for the years, specific content, and minor cosmetic details. Some books have personalized bookplates, others have the Gau handstamp, and most have multiple sets of his initials from when he read and approved specific portions of legislation. Details will be given in each offering.
