This is a scarce original badge paired with a post-war copy for comparison purposes. Both are bronze with no maker marks. The original is a "three hole" long-fanged vaulted solid back variant of this badge. It has a flat pin and simple hook attachment on the back. The copy has NO holes, is NOT vaulted, has a ROUND pin with the wrong type of hinge and catch on the back, thick snakes and dagger, and smaller skull. The only reason the copy is included is that this particular pair of badges was used in a display to demonstrate the distinctions between the original and the post-war versions of the solid back style badges. It is a white alloy, with crossed Russian Cossack swords and wreath design with "FRONTE RUSSO" in Italian on a banner across the bottom. Here is a view of the back. It has a lot of raised maker marks typical of Italian badges. It was made by LORIOLI of Milano, the same firm that made the German Italian campaign medals. This stein was given to Robert Millhaem by the German fighter pilot he shot down in WW2. The story goes"...By 1950 this German pilot had became a General in the East German Luftwaffe. He was visiting a US Forces Germany base where Millhaem was stationed. The German noticed the number on the US vehicle in Millhaem's driveway. He asked the boy in the yard if his dad was a pilot. The boy gave a proud yes. The General met Millhaem at his door and stated that number was his WW2 aircraft number. Millhaem confirmed that he shot him down. Two 3 x 4 inch period photographs show his son by his fathers aircraft & the other shows his aircraft and the 670 number with a huge iron cross. This stein features a Luftwaffe flying badge and the words Deutsche Luftwaffe on the front. The pewter lid displays a large 1939 Iron Cross First Class.
