During an interview in June, 1981, in Heidelberg, Albert Speer reminisced on the design and development of Eva Braun's unique and distinctive logo -- a stylized butterfly. Speer stated Dr. Karl Brandt, who was Hitler's principal physician (since 1934), suggested the cloverleaf design. Speer later designed the butterfly monogram for her and she used it on nearly every one of her personal possessions. In his book, Inside the Third Reich, Dr. Speer also indicated he incorporated the butterfly logo in some furniture he designed for her. If the maker didn't apply it -- as was the case with linens, clothing, and similar articles, she would hand -- embroider the butterfly herself. Frau Junge (one of Hitler's personal secretaries, and close to Eva Braun) also recalls Eva's hand embroidered monogram, referring to it as a four-leaf clover and attributing its use to Eva's superstitions, related in the book Voices from the Bunker by Pierre Galante and Eugene Silianoff.

The "EB" butterfly monogram is engraved on the front center of the objective bridge. The optics are clear and bright with no collimation or parallax distortions present. EBRC-001 EB Rolleiflex 60mm (2-1/4 inch) Twin Lens Reflex Camera and Leather Case |
This is a very high quality camera used by Eva Braun for snapshot photography at
at the Berghof. There are several photographs existing that show her carrying this camera.
This camera (and a number of other items) were taken in early May, just prior to the end of the war, by Captain J. T. Schwidde, a US Army doctor assigned to Company D, 3rd Medical Battalion, 3rd Infantry Division. This is a photo of Captain Schwidde in Class A uniform, and another photo in fatigues sitting in one of Hermann Göring's chairs outside the ruins of his home in Berchtesgaden. He wrote several V-Mail letters (shown here and here), specifically mentioning the "liberation" of this camera and some china and crystal (shown on the Glass and Crystal page) which was mailed to his wife on 8 May 1945, V-E Day. He also acquired a number of other items -- including the massive record collection of Martin Bormann, which can be seen here, along with 1946 dated newspaper articles describing his adventures and picturing some of the items taken.
The camera is in the original case and has the original leather strap as well. There is some minor wear to the case and some crazing and cracking of the strap. Here are several views of the camera in the case.
The condition is generally very good to near excellent, with slight wear to the case from age. |
