SOE Button Escape and Evasion Compasses

The British were specialists at miniaturizing compasses. They were issued to pilots and aviators, operatives and agents, or any personnel that would need a fast, easy, virtually undetectable way of determining direction. A few examples are available here.  Several of these compasses were the originals used in the production of the MI-9 Red Book (Per Ardua Libertas)

The issue compass is shown with a hollow button cover -- a typical method of carry. It is shown with a US penny to show size.  The particular one shown below has been sold and it is not available.  Several other styles are available.

The US Army (and some Navy and USMC) buttons "borrowed" the concept. The US versions are much scarcer, and tend to have cruder compasses. This is an Army uniform button with a concealed compass embedded under a hinged back. The back snaps shut to keep the face of the button closed. The compass is a very tiny jeweled needle compass with eight points of the compass marked. The button is standard in all other respects. There is some wear and tarnish from age.

$799.99 as shown

This is a CBI theater made OSS evasion compass.  It is made of Indian ivory with a very small 1/4 inch brass mounted compass embedded in the side.  It has a ring for a dogtag chain or necklace.  It measures 7/8 by 5/8 inches overall.  This is a view of the reverse side.  The compass is still functional.

WWII "Naughty" Concealed Compass Razor Kit

This is a Camp X OSS issue Gillette name brand razor in a custom-designed "naughty" package with two concealed magnetic razor blade compass in the original wrapping and package.

This is a very well built padded Khaki Set.  It is US Army Property marked on a silver stencil on the inside cover.

This concealed razor blade type of compass is described on a page of the MI9 book Per Ardua Libertas, cited above.  The Brits also used Gillette marked products in the SOE "Naughty" packaging.

It is very likely there is also a concealed silk map sewn into the double wall case, but the stitching would have to be pulled to check.  It was not uncommon to include an escape map with these types of kits.  It is priced as if it does NOT contain a map.

It measures 4-1/2 by 2-1/4 inches closed as shown here, front and back.

The condition is near excellent, as shown.  The two "naughty" magnetic and three "dove" (non-magnetic) blades are all mint in the original paper wrap.

OSS/SOE European Scale Sterile Compass
This is a near-mint condition German (Eastern European Style) Scales 50mm (2 inches) sterile marching compass.

This compass is sterile, completely devoid of any maker marks. East is indicated by the letter "O" and South by the letter "Z". It has the usual 360 degree markings (8 cardinal points, N, NO, O, ZO, Z, ZW, W, and NW with radium dots for all but North (a radium circle) and South (a radium vertical line) and NO dots for NW or NO, by design. The body is solid machined aluminum with an aluminum cover. The heavy glass bezel rotates freely, and has a brass knurled retaining ring with detents to prevent inadvertent movement. The needle lifter mechanism is intact and functional.

It measures about 2 inches wide and high, and about 1/2 inch thick, closed. The lid opens to 90 degrees only, as shown.

The condition is generally near excellent, with a very tiny flake on the bezel, as shown

This is an overall view of the back, showing the complete lack of markings.  This is a close-up of the front, showing the unusual scales on this compass.

This is a close-up view of the top of the compass, showing the slot in the cover for reading the bearing even when closed.

The radium dots and other marks are intact, however long-dead from the passage of time.  The solid aluminum body, brass bezel and glass crystal are in superlative condition.  All parts are functional (excepting the radium), and it points North with all parts smoothly operating throughout their expected range.

Map Time Distance and March Step Calculator
This is a near mint condition LG maker marked map calculator once owned by Panzer General Hasso von Manteuffel.

This is a fairly unusual and useful map calculator.  As well as providing the usual distance measurement by following a path of march on a map, it also calculates the number of marching steps to cover the distance and the amount of time to cover that distance, all of use for a tactical commander.

This is a view from the 200K side. This is a view from the 75K side. It measures 50mm in diameter and 15mm thick. It has heavy beveled glass crystals on both sides.  It is deeply blued (browned) with gold accents at the bezels and loop.

This instrument is calibrated in thousands of steps (Schritte), indexed on the 1s and minor increments on the .2 (200 steps) from 1(K) to 40(K) Distance in Kilometers is by 2s from 2 to 60km.  Time is on the hour from 1 to 6 hours, with minor increments every 5 minutes with majors on the 15s. on the 1:75,000 side and indexed on the 2s and minor increments on the .4 (400 steps) on the 1:200,000 side.  Distance in Kilometers is by 2s from 2 to 60km.  Time is on the hour from 1 to 12 hours, with minor increments every 10 minutes, majors on the 30s.

Map scales of 1:150,000 and 1:100,000 can be easily extrapolated by multiplying the 75K scales by 2 or dividing the 200K scales by 2.

If you are a tactician, this is a MUST-HAVE instrument.  The quality is exceptional throughout.  This instrument is completely serviceable and ready to use.

It has heavy beveled glass crystals on both sides.  It has a cursor lock (loosened by twisting the round ring) on the German silver bezel. This view shows the thick beveled glass crystals, front and rear.

This instrument has three major scales (A, B, and C) where the A and B scales are for standard logarithmic multiplication, and the C scale is for squares.  There are also inverse scales.  Both sides have independently rotating fine line cursors.  The rotors are ganged front and back so when the rotor is turned by the central thumbscrew on either side, the corresponding movement is shown on the reverse.

If you are an engineer, this is a MUST-HAVE instrument.  The quality is exceptional throughout.  This instrument is completely serviceable and ready to use.
