Welcome to Snyder's Treasure Trove of Militaria!

Ninteenth Century and Earlier Alaskan  Eskimo Treasures

An Alcan Highway Adventure

I rode a bus for 600 miles in this two lane gravel road from White Horse in Yukon Territory in Canada to Fairbanks. It could hardly be called a pleasure trip, as you sleep in a Quonset hut ride over tree boughs where the road has been washed away & pass no garage nor repair station in the whole distance."

Before any modern settlement, the Ipiutak lived here.  The descriptive Inuit name of the place, "Tikarakh" or "Tikigaq" commonly spelled "Tiagara", means "forefinger". It was recorded as "Tiekagagmiut" in 1861 by P. Tikhmeniev Wich of the Russian Hydrographic Department and on Russian Chart 1495 it became "Tiekaga".  This ancient village site was advantageous, because the protrusion of Point Hope into the sea brought the whales close to the shore.

At Tikigaq, they built semi-subterranean houses using mainly whalebone and driftwood. Point Hope is one of the oldest continually occupied sites in North America. While some of the earlier dwellings have been lost to erosion as the island shrinks, it still provides a welter of valuable information to archaeologists on how early Eskimos survived in their harsh environment.  The Tikigaq site is "by far the most extensive and complete one-period site yet discovered and described in the entire circumpolar region." -  Helge Larsen.

USA Late 19th Century or Earlier Large Eskimo Combat Hand Knife Made from a near Fossilized Handle & a Flint Axe Head
This is a 6.5 inch long x 2 inch wide hand knife made from fossilized bone grip and thin light black 2 x 4 inch flint blade.

The two pieces are held together with two drilled holes sinew & a wood rivet.

This is an adz, for woodworking.  Its handle is antler (caribou), the socket for the blade is probably sea mammal bone (walrus? whale?) rather than antler, and I suspect the blade is jade.

It's hard to tell about the blade from the photos, but I assume is polished rather than flaked (unlike the flaked arrowhead, AL-24).  North Alaskan jades range from green to black.  Nothing's fossilized.

All parts are extremely well made & all are in near excellent condition.

This is a 16 inch overall seal killing tool in miniature.

The 2 inch baleen spear head is attached to a 14 inch sinew line with a drum shaped bobber of skin.

This is a toy called Eskimo yo-yo missing one of its two padded cylinders.  You swing the two in opposite directions by holding the handle, which is indeed baleen but not a spear head.

Point Hope Alaska Near Fossilized Whale Bone Broach Artifact Found in a deep 200+ year old Underground Abandoned Eskimo Native Village
This is a very ancient one piece well worn & polished broach.

It measures 1.5 x 2 inches.

All of these are from bird bolas, each device consisting of typically five to eight of these hard objects on cords about two feet long, and all the cords tied into one handle (rather like the Eskimo yo-yo).

These are thrown into a flock of passing migratory birds, with the idea that you'd hit at least one.  I'm attaching a link so that you can understand them better.  I'm sure the first three (AL-8-10) are bone (walrus, most likely), while the fourth (AL-11) maybe ivory.

Point Hope Alaska LARGE Hole Bear Tooth Broach Artifact Found in a deep 200+ year old Underground Abandoned Eskimo Native Village
This is a very ancient one piece LARGE Hole bear tooth.

It measures 3/4 x 1-1/2 inches.

Point Hope Alaska LARGE Hole Bear Tooth Broach Artifact Found in a deep 200+ year old Underground Abandoned Eskimo Native Village This is called a finger rest; I think it's ivory rather than bear tooth.

It's lashed mid-length onto a wooden harpoon shaft, probably a larger one for whaling.  Its purpose is to keep your hand from slipping as you thrust the harpoon into a sea mammal.

Here's an example of its placement (you'll have to scroll down):  http://elfshotgallery.blogspot.com/2013/03/thule-inuit-harpoon-repairs.html

This is a very ancient one piece 2 hole broach.

It measures 1 x 6 inches.

Point Hope Alaska Large TWO Hole Broach Artifact Found in a deep 200+ year old Underground Abandoned Eskimo Native Village  This is ivory or bone; it's a toggle, use to link two things together.

A cord or rope (of seal hide, usually, or walrus hide) is tied through one hole, and the other can be linked to a second line.  Think of it as something like the use of dead eyes on ship's riggings: one end's attached to a line, and you tie it to another line
